Few but large projects in Asia
Operations & market
Precise Biometrics’ operations in this region have been managed by the subsidiary Precise Biometrics Asia Ltd. in Hong Kong. Because this company has not succeeded in living up to our expectations, Precise Biometrics took the decision to close the Hong Kong office in the third quarter. Since then sales to Asia have been handled from the head office in Lund.
Our efforts in this region have primarily focused on a small number of ID card projects of a more extensive nature.

Market and trends
The region is an established market for biometric solutions. Solutions for access control and simpler logon solutions are in great demand in the region. As Asia occupies a dominant position for the production of fingerprint readers and other biometric hardware, there is a lot of competition in the region. The challenge is both the extensive competition with local players competitors and, and the fact that it is such an immense market.
Several Asian countries are also expected to take decisions on national ID cards in the next few years. Match-on-Card technology is under consideration in several cases.
The past year
The roll-out of Thailand’s ID card continues and at the year-end more than 20 million Thais were using the new biometric ID card.
During the year the Japanese chip manufacturer OKI commenced manufacturing of a new type of chip with fingerprint technology from Precise Biometrics. This chip is the size of a postage stamp and offers cost-effective fingerprint recognition that is easy to implement in battery operated hardware. The technology enables hardware manufacturers to integrate fingerprint recognition in their products without having to develop biometric solutions themselves.

Comments
“The Thai ID card is the largest card project in the world with Match-on-Card. The implication of this is that it is both challenging and highly interesting, because other large Asian countries are evaluating Match-on-Card for their own new national ID cards.”
Mads Rönnebro, Regional Sales Director, Asia
