Europe - the first established market

Operations and market

Europe was the Company’s first established market, and Precise Biometrics have a large number of established partners and contacts in the region. Most of the major smart card companies have their head offices in this region. European sales are managed from the head office in Lund and this involves extensive travel throughout the region. Some parts of sales in Scandinavia, above all specific solutions for customers, take place through Precise Biometrics Solutions in Karlstad.

Operations are characterized by a large number of transactions and active participation in industry events in the region.

Trends

Several pilot projects are in the process of being initiated in the region, partly as a result of various EU initiatives for efficient e-administration.

Large parts of Eastern Europe have taken a keen interest in biometric solutions and this has brought Precise Biometrics’ technology into focus during the year.

The past year

The main part of the turnover in 2009 is constituted by a large number of orders. In addition to ongoing roll-outs and earnings from projects in progress, 2009 was characterized by several pilot projects with government agencies in the region, including one health card project in Western Europe.

During the year, Precise Biometrics initiated cooperation with the Polish company PWPW (Polish Security Printing Works), which is the largest player in terms of the issue of ID cards and passports in Poland and Eastern Europe. Read an interview with Martin Simka from PWPW.

Precise Biometrics also participated in several events during the year. The Company participated in, and won, the global SIMagine competition, which is held every year at GSMA Mobile World Congress – the world’s largest event for mobile communication. This winning solution focuses on the aviation industry and is based on Precise Match-on-SIM™. The technology enables fast-lane service by means of fingerprints and mobile phones. The concept, which is based on experiences gained from the aviation industry, has been developed after input from SAS.

The roll-out of Portugal’s ID card is on schedule. The total roll-out of 14 million cards is planned to be ready in 2012. Today some 4 million Portuguese citizens are using biometric ID cards.

Fitness24Seven continued its expansion of gyms with biometric physical access control. At the year-end the chain had around 35 gyms and over 30,000 members. Precise Biometrics’ licensed sales of cards to the gym chain are increasing as a result of the continuously increasing number of members.

Comment

“The projects presented in Europe today have never been as tangible and well-specified. Even if the financial crisis has led to some projects being cancelled or postponed, it has also caused customers to become much more specific and target orientated. This has meant that the pipeline for the region has never been as well-defined as it is now, which increases confidence and feels very encouraging.”
