Operations and Market

The Latin American business is in the development process and the company is exclusively focusing on major card projects.

Business in the region is administered from the US subsidiary Precise Biometrics Inc. but most actual marketing work is managed by local and global partners.

Trends

Despite limited implementation of smart card systems up until now, Precise Biometrics sees great potential for expansion in the region in the forthcoming years.

The interest in the region for fingerprint biometrics is particularly strong when it comes to ID cards for government agencies and national ID cards. Many countries specify Match-on-Card technology as a requirement in their tenders. Awareness and experience of biometric systems is good in the region, based on existing AFIS and civil AFIS (database) systems.

The past year

Precise Biometrics now has 5 countries which have Match-on-Card on their national ID cards. The fifth country who chose Precise Match-on-Card™ was confidential when communicated to the market in 2008. During 2009 Precise Biometrics has announced that the fifth country is Venezuela. Licenses for the ID card have been sold during the year and will be ordered continuously.

Latin America is a developing market, therefore the focus during 2009 has been on the Venezuelan ID card and other large potential customers in the region.

Comments

“The interest in Latin America has increased. Many ID card tenders on government level specify Match-on-Card. With a large installation such as the Venezuelan ID card, we are well positioned for upcoming procurements in the region.”
